Sustainable Surf is a 501c3 non-profit based in California. Our mission is to regenerate the health of our ocean planet. We believe the ocean is the hero of reversing climate change and its superpower is carbon sequestration. To help enable this superpower, our SeaTrees program plants, protects, and restores blue carbon coastal ecosystems, including kelp and mangrove forests, seagrass meadows, coral reefs, and coastal watersheds. These are the most effective ecosystems on the planet for carbon sequestration, they are biodiversity hotspots and support sustainable development.

Job Description

SeaTrees’  Northstar goal is to support 100 blue carbon projects by 2030. We’re also aiming to reach 5 million SeaTrees planted across all projects by the end of 2024. We’re looking for a new team member to help us achieve these ambitious goals.

The Development Manager will work with the development team to grow Sustainable Surf’s revenue, with a focus on the SeaTrees Program and general operating support. This will require working cross-functionally with the co-founders, development, finance, project, and marketing teams to gather information in order to tell compelling stories that generate additional support. 

This position requires visibility and understanding of every aspect of the organization to better communicate our positive impact. Our small and mighty team is passionate with diverse skill sets and backgrounds. 

This is a full-time position based in Southern California - Manhattan Beach.

Job Responsibilities

  • Work with the development team to achieve Sustainable Surf’s revenue goals

  • Manage all stages of donor development including identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship

  • Identify creative ways to engage donors and inspire them to provide additional support

  • Research grant opportunities, write applications and reports

  • Manage leads, accounts, and opportunities in Salesforce

  • Drive business development with new corporate partners that align with our  SeaTrees Program

  • Support corporate partnerships and creative cause marketing campaigns

  • Produce community events and fundraisers that showcase the positive benefits of our programs

  • Work with the finance team  to ensure donors are thanked in a timely fashion and appropriately based on the amount they donate (eg. letter, handwritten note, phone call)

  • Work with leadership and the development team on major donor development

  • Maintain third-party donation platforms such as Benevity, Pledge, ShoppingGives, DailyKarma

  • Produce monthly reports on all revenue streams

Qualifications

Essential Skills + Requirements

  • Passion for ocean conservation and climate change solutions

  • Two-three years minimum Nonprofit fundraising experience

  • Experience managing individual donors

  • Experience writing email appeals

  • Experience researching grants, writing applications and reports

  • Experience working with corporate partners

  • CRM experience, with Salesforce being a plus

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Additional Qualifications

  • PC literacy required; Proficient use of technology including Google Suite and MS Office (Outlook, Word,  Excel, PowerPoint), document management systems (Google Drive and Dropbox), and internet resources

  • Highly detailed oriented

  • Data analysis skills

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to work as a team

  • Ability to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines and standard operating procedures

  • Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude

  • Ability to work independently and carry out duties to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard operating procedures

  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and emails

POSITION DETAILS: 

  • Job Type:  Full-time, hourly

  • Compensation: $32 -$35 per hour

  • Work location: Hybrid - office (Manhattan Beach) and work from home

  • Benefits: Medical, dental, vision, chiropractic, 401k

  • Work Location: Manhattan Beach, California

  • This position does anticipate some travel

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary stand/sit position at least 50% of the time. Constantly operates a computer, calculator, printer and other office devices.
